September 22 Fur Trade in the Early 19th Century Speaker: David C. Gray. This month, explore the early 19th-century American fur trade and what drove it, who shaped it, how it affected Native populations, and why this booming enterprise eventually came to an end. October 27 Shaping Boundaries: Our History in Maps Speaker: Bruce Mihelish. Many European countries laid claim to these lands. Indigenous people felt differently. Learn how the fourthlargest state was shaped between 1500 and 1950. November 24 Missoula Valley Before Statehood Speaker: Sally Thompson. In 1876, Chief Charlo gave a speech that challenged newcomers to the Five Valleys region and still carries weight today. Drawing on his framing of history, this illustrated presentation will invite you to reconsider your own perception of the early decades of Missoula County.
